All contractors licensed to work in Collier County must have a valid contractor’s license, general liability insurance, and worker’s compensation insurance. Almost all projects require a permit and an inspection. For jobs requiring a permit, make sure the contractor asks you to sign the “Notice of Commencement”. Check with your local building officials to determine which projects require a building permit.

Before contracting with a contractor, you should verify the contractor has a valid license issued by either Collier County or the State of Florida. We recommend you confirm the validity of the license presented to you.

A local Business Tax Receipt (BTR) is not a license and should not be used as proof that the contractor is licensed to do the work he/she is contracting to perform.

Contracting or hiring of an unlicensed contractor is the sole responsibility of the consumer. Consumers who hire unlicensed contractors or fail to obtain the required permits and inspections could be fined. Unpermitted work may not meet required building codes, which could result in hazardous or unsafe conditions. Unlicensed contractors are usually not insured, and the consumer may be liable for any injuries or property damage that may occur during the construction.

Refer to our Contractor Licensing Flyer to learn more about unlicensed contractors and early warning signs that a contractor may be unlicensed.

File a Contractor Complaint

Pursuant to Florida State Statute, a compliance officer may not initiate an investigation of a potential violation of a duly enacted code or ordinance by way of an anonymous complaint. A person who reports a potential violation of a code or an ordinance must provide his or her name and address to the respective local government before an investigation may occur.

Please complete the form online and provide supporting documentation to report issues with a contractor or if you suspect unpermitted and/or unlicensed work is being performed. A compliance officer will review the information and reach out to you to help resolve the issue. If you are unable to submit the form online, please use this Preliminary Complaint Form.
