Tourist Development Council Appointment
This nine member council was created on March 23, 1992 by Ordinance No. 92-18 to meet monthly to make recommendations to the Board of County Commissioners regarding a proposed plan of uses for tourist development tax revenues, for the effective operation of the special projects or uses of the tourist development tax revenues, and to review all expenditures of revenues from the tourist development trust fund. Membership consists of three Elected Officials, one from the Board of County Commissioners, one from the City of Naples, one from the City of Marco Island, up to four tourism industry owner/operators and two individuals involved in the tourism industry. Terms are four years and members may be reappointed.
Tourism Works for Collier County
Tourism is important business for Naples, Marco Island and the Everglades. As the leading employer and the primary economic engine for the region, the tourism industry is responsible for over 38,500 jobs in Collier County. Over 2 million visitors in 2018 spent over $1.5 billion dollars, resulting in a total economic impact of over $2.1 billion to Collier County.
Residents benefit from the tourism industry through enhanced amenities in the community and through tax savings. An estimated tax savings of $1,000 per household in 2018 thanks to the expenditures of visitors. Visitors contributed over $28 million in tourist development taxes in our region and they provide $130 million in sales and gas tax revenue in 2018.
Tourist development taxes pay for extensive beach renourishment, inlet management and beach park facilities programs in Collier County along with county museum operations, special events and destination marketing through the Convention and Visitors Bureau, and promotion of tourism businesses through advertising and public relations.
