From Copeland to McDonald’s Quarters: African-American Communities in Collier County

African-Americans began arriving in Collier County as runaway slaves around the same time as the Seminoles. During times of segregation and Jim Crow, blacks were not allowed to own property and were only allowed to live in certain areas of town. Because of the laws and racism many of these communities suffered harsh conditions such as no indoor plumbing, unsafe living structures, and garbage and sewage in the streets. Yet, these communities thrived. In this lecture, Joy Murphy, Curator of Education, will discuss the history of some of the African-American communities around Collier County as well as the hard work and perseverance of the residents to build a better place for themselves and future generations.
